NFL buffering on YouTube TV? You’re not alone today

We’ve got bad news for anyone who relies on YouTube and YouTube TV for their NFL games — there’s some definite lag happening today. It’s so bad and so apparent that there’s a message atop the YouTube TV help pages.

The message reads: “If you’re experiencing buffering issues on YouTube, our team is aware and working on a fix. YouTube TV or NFL Sunday Ticket may also be impacted.”

On the end user side of things, you might see excessive loading times. We’re also seeing decreased resolution and/or frame rate. Sometimes it’s one or the other. Sometimes it’s both. (We’ve also been unable to watch YouTube TV on a Nest Hub Max, for what that’s worth.)

Having your NFL games lagging is never a good thing, but it’s particularly bad with YouTube TV being the biggest live-streaming service in the U.S. with more than 5 million subscribers at last count — and Google says it’s still growing, thanks to NFL Sunday Ticket having made the move to YouTube TV and YouTube proper.

And maybe making things even worse is that there’s not a darn thing any of us can do but wait.

So at this point, you’ve got a couple options. One is to shift over to an over-the-air antenna, which theoretically shouldn’t be affected (unless the problem is with the source broadcasts). Or you could switch to a YouTube TV alternative for a bit and hope it has a free trial to get you through the weekend.

Or you could just head out to your friendly neighborhood sports bar, a friend’s house, or just go outside and enjoy the sunshine.

The tweaks keep coming to the world's largest video provide. Today YouTube is taking the wraps off some three-dozen (more or less) new features. It's a cross-platform announcement, with the goods hitting phones and tablets, as well as televisions and wherever else you do your YouTube viewing.

Here's what you have to look forward to:

Flipping through the myriad college football games on a recent weekend, I was struck by a revelation: Multiview on YouTube TV — even in its imperfect, inflexible form — nearly fixes one of my biggest gripes about the leading live streaming platform.

The "problem" really isn't a problem insofar as anything is actually broken. It's just the way YouTube TV works, and it's almost certainly something done by design. If you're a habitual channel-flipper, you already know full well how streaming services like YouTube TV, Hulu With Live TV, and other options aren't exactly known for making it quick to fly through the channels, one after another.

We're only hitting Week 2 of the 2023 NFL season, and already everything has changed. Maybe not for everyone, but certainly for folks in and around New York City. The Jets eked out a win despite losing quarterback Aaron Rogers after just four snaps. And it's arguable whether that's a more painful loss — literally, metaphorically, and spiritually — than the New York Football Giants getting shut out by Dallas in their opening game in a 40-0 walloping. Things aren't a whole lot better in Pittsburgh, which was the victim of preseason hype yet again.

That's the bad news. The good news is that we get to do it all over again this week with a dozen games up for grabs on NFL Sunday Ticket, which debuted admirably this season on YouTube and YouTube TV after decades locked away on DirecTV.
