Foodservice establishments continue to add jobs for second straight month
According to preliminary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the foodservice industry added a net 1.5 million jobs in June on a seasonally-adjusted basis. This would be the second month in a row that jobs have increased by close to 1.5 million, as businesses continue their long road to recovery amid the coronavirus pandemic.
These jobs represent a significant chunk of the 7.5 million net jobs added to the overall economy during the last two months. Unfortunately, those 3 million jobs don’t even represent half of the total foodservice jobs lost during coronavirus lockdowns.
The US economy added 4.8 million total jobs in June and the unemployment rate fell to 11.1 percent, down from a peak of 14.7 percent in April but still far above the 3.5 percent level in February.
